Chinese Junior Player Zhang Zhijie Dies During Event in Indonesia

A 17-year-old Chinese badminton player, Zhang Zhijie, tragically died after collapsing on the court during the Badminton Asia Junior Championships in Yogyakarta province, Indonesia, on June 30, 2024.

Zhang Zhijie was competing against Kazuma Kawano of Japan when he suddenly collapsed and began having seizures.

Medical teams immediately treated Zhang on the court before he was rushed to a nearby hospital by ambulance. He was later transferred to Dr. Sardjito General Hospital, a main government hospital in Yogyakarta.

Broto Happy, spokesperson for the Badminton Association of Indonesia, reported, “The conclusion of the examination and treatment of the victim at both hospitals showed the same results, namely that the victim experienced sudden cardiac arrest.”

In honor of Zhang, badminton players and officials in Yogyakarta held a minute of silence on the court Monday morning before the quarterfinals.

Badminton Asia expressed its condolences, stating it was “immensely saddened” and noting that “the world of badminton has lost a talented player.”

The Chinese Badminton Association also released a statement expressing deep distress over Zhang’s sudden death and gratitude for the concern and assistance provided.

“We feel deeply distressed over the unfortunate death of Zhang Zhijie from a sudden illness while competing in an international competition,” the statement read. “We express our sincere gratitude to all sectors of society for the concern and help given to Zhang Zhijie. We will do our best to provide help to Zhang Zhijie’s family.”
