Taylor was born and raised in Australia, where he first played league as a child before being persuaded to play rugby by his father. The biggest familial distance between two All Blacks in history was spanned by his great-great-grandfather, a New Zealand rugby player named Walter Pringle, who played for the All Blacks in 1893.
