Colin was born into a family of creatives. His uncle, Robert Cantwell, was an American author.

Colin bagged his first degree in Animation at the University of California, Los Angeles.

He then proceeded to the School of Architecture, upon invitation by Frank Lloyd Wright.

After graduation, Colin worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and NASA.

Colin got a nomination for Best Special Visual Effects for his work on WarGames at the British Academy Film Awards in 1984.

Cantwell died on May 21, 2022, while at his home in Colorado. He was 90 years old.
