Danai Gurira is an actress and playwright of American and Zimbabwean descent, best known for her role in the AMC horror drama series The Walking Dead.

Born in Grinnell, Iowa, on February 14, 1978, Gurira graduated from Dominican Convent High School.

She completed her undergraduate degree in psychology at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Gurira later obtained a Master of Fine Arts in acting from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.

Gurira received a Tony Award nomination for writing the Broadway play Eclipsed.

In addition to appearing in the movie For Coloured Girls, Gurira also taught acting and playwriting in Liberia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.
