As a freshman, Holmes started all 35 Dayton Flyers games, averaging 12.8 points per game, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game. He also established a school record with 81 total blocks in a season. Holmes was voted Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, second-team All-Atlantic 10, and conference All-Defense. Holmes entered his sophomore season as a contender for the Karl Malone Award.
