Moana actually died in the storm at the beginning of the movie, following a shipreck in the typhoon.

She finds herself in the land of the demi-gods, and some mythical creatures including Maui, her guardian angel.
Early drafts of the script called it the underworld and it was filled with spirits of the dead instead of monsters, so it’s conceivable that Moana being dead, is a thought which stuck yet wasn’t expressly expressed.
Maui has been tasked to take her to ‘Te Fiti’, where she would fulfill her mission.

During the voyage, Moana is visited by her grandmother who had died earlier. She returns as a glowing blue ghost to offer Moana guidance before the final confrontation with Te Ka.
Eventually, Moana returns the Heart of Te Fiti and returns to the land of the living.
Moana is Disney’s 56th animated film, fracturing original tracks written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina, with an orchestral score, composed by Mancina.
