A Russian army officer by the name of Dmitry Utkin, he died on August 23, 2023. He worked with the GRU as a special operations officer and was a lieutenant colonel. With Wagner as his rumored call-sign, he is said to have formed the Wagner Group. Four Orders of Russian Courage were given to Utkin.

Utkin was a supporter of Nazi Germany, according to various news sources, and he had several SS insignias and other Nazi symbols tattooed on him. Richard Wagner, a German composer, was immensely liked by Adolf Hitler and his music was hijacked by the Nazis, which is why Utkin reportedly gave himself the name Wagner.

Utkin, according to the Wagner Group, was a Rodnover and a follower of the Slavic national religion. 2016 saw Utkin’s final outing in front of the general public.

He wed Elena Shcherbinina in the 1990s, and the two eventually had three kids together. In the early 2000s, they got divorced. On a television show in 2015, Shcherbinina reported Utkin missing.

On August 23, 2023, a plane crash is said to have claimed Utkin’s life. Yevgeny Prigozhin, the CEO of the Wagner Group, was one of nine other people who purportedly died in the collision. The plane was allegedly shot down over Tver Oblast by Russian air defenses, according to a Telegram account connected to Wagner.
