Martha Helen Stewart was born on August 3, 1941, in Jersey City, New Jersey, the United States as the second of six children born to parents, Edward Kostyra and Martha Ruszkowski.

Martha Stewart is of Polish heritage. Both her parents worked as teachers and her father later became a pharmaceutical salesman.

Martha Stewart graduated from Nutley High School. She attended Barnard College of Columbia University where she majored in architectural history. She graduated with a double major in history and architectural history.
