He produced tremendous numbers during his senior year at IMG Academy, averaging 23.2 points, 11.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 2.3 blocks per game. Due to this, Rivals.com rated him as a five-star recruit, placing him as the No. 8 power forward and No. 25 player in the country in 2010.

Powell later enrolled at Stanford University and participated in basketball for the Stanford Cardinals. He started 26 of the 31 games he played in as a freshman, averaging 8.1 points and 5.2 rebounds per contest, earning him a spot on the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team.
