Emily Maitlis was born on September 6, 1970, in Canada to parents Peter Maitlis and Marion Maitlis. Her parents are British Jewish parents.
Emily Maitlis was brought up in Sheffield, Yorkshire. Her father, Peter is the Emeritus Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Sheffield, while her mother Marion Maitlis works as a psychotherapist.
Emily Maitlis schooled at King Edward VII School, Sheffield before studying English at Queens College, Cambridge. She has worked as a documentary maker in Cambodia and China and worked for the NBC network.

Emily Maitlis was appointed as a contributing editor to The Spectator magazine in July 2007. She did an excellent job presenting the US 2012 election coverage on BBC One and the BBC News Channel alongside David Dimbleby in 2012.

Emily Maitlis began presenting the BBC podcast, Americast in 2020. She is now the lead anchor of BBC Two’s news as well as their current affairs programme Newsnight. Emily Maitlis also covers elections for the BBC in the UK, US and Europe.
Emily Maitlis is presently married to investment manager Mark Gwynne and together they have two children, Milo and Max.
