Fabiano Luigi Caruana is the reigning US Chess Champion and an Italian and American chess grandmaster. Caruana is the third-highest-rated player in history, with a peak rating of 2844.

He is the son of Santina Caruana and Lou Caruana. His family moved from Miami to the Park Slope neighbourhood of Brooklyn, New York City, when he was four years old.
His chess talent was discovered when he was five years old in an after-school chess programme at Congregation Beth Elohim, a reform Jewish congregation in Park Slope. That same year, he competed in his debut competition at the Polgar Chess Centre in Queens, New York.

At the age of 14, he achieved grandmaster status and won his first Italian Chess Championship, which he repeated in 2008, 2010, and 2011. Caruana won the Sinquefield Cup in 2014, with a performance rating of 3098, the best ever at the elite level.
In 2015, he switched his national federation membership back to the United States. Caruana won team gold and individual bronze for the United States on board one at the 42nd Chess Olympiad. Caruana excels at quick and blitz chess in addition to conventional chess.
