Former Man City star Ian Mellor dies aged 74

Ian Mellor, a former footballer who played for various English clubs including Manchester City, passed away on May 1, 2024, at the age of 74, after a battle with amyloidosis.

His son, Neil Mellor, who is also a former professional footballer and currently works as a pundit for Sky Sports, announced his father’s passing.

Mellor struggled with amyloidosis, a rare illness that affects the body’s organs, before he passed away. He began his professional football journey with Manchester City in 1970, where he scored 10 goals in 41 games.

Mellor was part of the Manchester City team that won the Charity Shield in 1972. Throughout his career, he also played for Norwich City, Brighton & Hove Albion, Sheffield Wednesday, Bradford City, Worksop Town, and even had a spell with Tung Sing in Hong Kong, where he gained the nickname “the Spider.”

Following the news of his death, tributes flooded in from his former clubs, highlighting his contributions to their teams and offering condolences to his family.

Mellor is survived by his son, Neil. His legacy as a footballer will be remembered by many, and his passing is mourned by the football community.
