Fred Brooks Jr. was an American computer architect, software engineer, and computer scientist. Fred Brooks was married to Nancy Greenwood Brooks.

Fred Brooks attended Duke University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in physics in 1953, and Harvard University, where he received a PhD in applied mathematics (computer science) in 1956.
Brooks worked as a graduate teaching assistant for Ken Iverson at Harvard’s graduate programme in “automatic data processing,” the world’s first.
Fred Brooks Jr is best known for overseeing the development of IBM’s System/360 family of computers and the OS/360 software support package before writing candidly about the experience in his seminal book The Mythical Man-Month.

Brooks was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in 1976 for his “contributions to computer system design and the development of academic programmes in computer sciences.”
Brooks is the recipient of numerous honours, including the National Medal of Technology in 1985 and the Turing Award in 1999.
Fred Brooks died at the age of 91 on Thursday, November 17, 2022. Details about his death have not been revealed.
