His expertise encompasses a broad range of diseases, such as cancer, autoimmune disease, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and many more.
In 2010, Maté became interested in ayahuasca, a conventional Amazonian plant treatment with the ability to treat addictions. He began planning multiday retreats for the treatment of addiction in conjunction with a Shipibo ayahuasquero from Peru.

These retreats, which were hosted in a community of Coast Salish First Nations people, were observed by health researchers from the Universities of Victoria and British Columbia.
Notwithstanding the drawbacks of the observational study design, the research showed that people reported significant changes in some psychological characteristics and a decline in problematic substance use. These results suggest that Maté’s claims about therapeutic efficacy might be true.
Nonetheless, the Canadian federal government threatened to denounce Maté to the RCMP if he did not stop using ayahuasca immediately after learning about it in 2011.

Notwithstanding this setback, Maté received recognition for his significant contributions to the treatment of addiction and to the understanding of how addiction, stress, and childhood development affect teenagers’ mental health. 2011 saw him receive the Civic Merit Award from the City of Vancouver.

Check out some quotes from Gabor Maté:
“It is impossible to understand addiction without asking what relief the addict finds, or hopes to find, in the drug or the addictive behaviour.”
― Gabor Maté
“The attempt to escape from pain, is what creates more pain.”
― Gabor Maté
“Not all addictions are rooted in abuse or trauma, but I do believe they can all be traced to painful experience. A hurt is at the centre of all addictive behaviours. It is present in the gambler, the Internet addict, the compulsive shopper and the workaholic. The wound may not be as deep and the ache not as excruciating, and it may even be entirely hidden—but it’s there. As we’ll see, the effects of early stress or adverse experiences directly shape both the psychology and the neurobiology of addiction in the brain.”
― Gabor Mate
“The difference between passion and addiction is that between a divine spark and a flame that incinerates.”
― Gabor Maté
“Not why the addiction but why the pain.”

Gabor Maté Treatment
A program developed by Dr. Gabor Maté focuses on helping families and individuals overcome trauma and addiction. His unconventional strategy is founded on the idea that childhood maltreatment is the core cause of addiction. Dr. Maté bases his theory on both clinical observations and brain research.
Also, Dr. Maté created the Compassionate Inquiry® psychotherapy method, which aids patients in discovering what lies behind their immediate problems. This strategy aims to expose the underlying reasons for their issues and encourage recovery in a caring and encouraging setting.
