In addition to serving as the New York Islanders’ alternate governor and general manager during his time in the National Hockey League (NHL), Garth E. Snow was also a former professional ice hockey goaltender for the United States.

In the 1993–94 season, Snow began his NHL career after being selected by the Quebec Nordiques in the sixth round of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. He later played for the Islanders, Vancouver Canucks, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Vancouver Canucks before making his final NHL appearance with them in 2005–06.

2019 saw his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame for Rhode Island. After Neil Smith was fired from his position as general manager of the New York Islanders after just 41 days on the job, Snow formally announced his retirement on July 18, 2006, and he was appointed to that position.
