Gary Pinkel was born to his mother, Gay Pinkel and his father, George Pinkel on April 27, 1952, in Akron, Ohio, United States where he was raised alongside his siblings, Kathleen Pinkel and Gregory Pinkel.

Gary Pinkel kickstarted being a head coach in 1991 with the University of Toledo, posting a record of 73-37-3 in 10 seasons. This record includes an astonishing 52-23-3 record in conference. Gary Pinkel won west division titles 3 times and the conference championship once in his 10 seasons spent with the team.

Gary Pinkel joined Missouri in 2000. Pinkel steered the Tigers to 10 bowl games in fifteen years, taking home six victories. Gary Pinkel won the Big 12 North Division 3 times (2007–2008, 2010), SEC East Division 2 times (2013–2014) and MAC West Division (2000) with the Tigers.

Gary Pinkel retired in 2015 due to a health condition termed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Gary Pinkel was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2022.
