Much is not known about Alagiah’s grandchildren. However, he seemed to be very fond of one of them – a granddaughter whose name is not yet known.
His fondness for his granddaughter can be traced to her birth, which he regarded as a “spiritual experience.” He said: “My granddaughter’s birth was a spiritual experience. There seemed something so powerful in a new life entering the world while another, mine, was so compromised. She even waited until my birthday to arrive.”
Interestingly, Alagiah’s granddaughter was born on his birthday.

As one of the BBC’s top international correspondents, he reported on a lot of topical issues, ranging from the Rwandan genocide to the plight of the Marsh Arabs in southern Iraq to the civil wars in Afghanistan, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Somalia.
Alagiah was appointed deputy anchor of the BBC One O’Clock News and BBC Nine O’Clock News in 1999.
He joined the BBC Six O’Clock News in January 2003, co-presenting with Sophie Raworth until October 2005, and then with Natasha Kaplinsky until October 2007. He took over as the sole broadcaster of the Six O’Clock News in December 2007.
In 2006, he began presenting World News Today on BBC World News and BBC Two, which was rebranded GMT on 1 February 2010. He last appeared on the program in 2014 because of his diagnosis of bowel cancer, which ultimately led to his death on July 25, 2023.
The BBC announced in April 2014 that Alagiah was being treated for bowel/colorectal cancer.
Alagiah declared on Twitter in late October 2015 that his therapy was complete, and he returned to the BBC on November 10, 2015.
Regrettably, the cancer returned in January 2018, and he required more treatment.
In a March 2018 interview with The Sunday Times, Alagiah stated that the cancer had progressed to a deadly stage, which may have been avoided if the screening age had been cut to 50 rather than 60 years.
Alagiah stated in October 2022 that his cancer had progressed and that he would be taking a sabbatical from television to undergo a new round of therapy.
Alagiah died of bowel cancer on July 24, 2023, at the age of 67.
