The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Akwasi Agyeman, has advocated for a reconsideration of the Supreme Court decision banning celebrity endorsements of alcoholic advertisements.

He suggests that there should be further discussions or clarification on the Supreme Court’s decision to establish guidelines that benefit artists.

“How do we say they cannot benefit? It needs further discussion. I think we should probably apply for a review [of the Supreme Court verdict],” Akwasi Agyeman told TV3.

His remark comes in response to widespread reactions to the Supreme Court ruling, which upheld the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) ban—a decision that industry players have opposed.

Speaking at the launch of the inaugural West Africa Music and Arts Festival in Accra, Mr. Agyeman expressed his support for celebrities who endorse alcoholic beverages, emphasizing that they need to earn a decent living.

“I am for our celebrities also making money off their fame; off their popularity so that they can live decent live and when they grow, they wouldn’t have to fall on philanthropists,” he said.

He further added that: “Even if the celebrities are not showing their faces, the music that are going to be used for these adverts – who is making them? Are they not talents?”
