Born on August 3, 1941, Hage Geingob’s political journey left an indelible mark on the history of Namibia. His leadership spanned from March 21, 2015, when he assumed the presidency, until the day of his passing.
A revered figure in Namibia’s political landscape, Geingob’s contributions were profound, earning him the title of a distinguished servant of the people, a liberation struggle icon, and the chief architect of the nation’s constitution.
President Geingob’s battle with cancer became public knowledge on January 8, 2024, when he courageously shared his diagnosis with the nation.

In pursuit of medical treatment, he embarked on a journey to the United States on January 25, seeking care for his ailment. After two days of treatment, Geingob returned to Namibia on January 30. Despite the valiant effort, the nation received the heartbreaking news of his demise on February 4.

Vice President Mbumba captured the essence of the loss, stating, “The Namibian nation has lost a distinguished servant of the people, a liberation struggle icon, the chief architect of our constitution, and the pillar of the Namibian house.”
In the face of this profound sorrow, Mbumba appealed to the nation to remain calm and collected while the government addresses the necessary state arrangements and protocols.
Hage Geingob’s political career was extensive and impactful. He served as Namibia’s first Prime Minister from 1990 to 2002 and took up the role again from 2012 to 2015.
His dedication to public service extended to a term as Minister of Trade and Industry between 2008 and 2012. Additionally, Geingob held the presidency of the ruling SWAPO Party from November 2017 until the time of his passing.
