Hampton Smith obituary

Hampton Smith, a former head coach at Albany State University and one of the greatest coaches in SIAC and HBCU football history, has reached the heights of glory. During his time at ASU, which included two stints as head football coach, Smith guided Albany State to nine SIAC titles.

Before leaving and eventually coming back in 1982, he served as the program’s coach from 1971 through 1976. Smith would come back and guide ASU to five straight victories from 1993 through 1997, including a share of the SIAC crown in 1988, and three straight SIAC championships from 1984 through 1986. In 1997, his final championship team at ASU went 11-1, including the only postseason victory of his career.
