English made every effort to play until he decided Thursday afternoon that his body is not ready after having surgery to repair a ruptured labrum in his hip on Feb. 14.
English posted on Twitter, “Unfortunately, I won’t be able to compete next week at The Masters.” “I’m recovering well from recent hip surgery, but I must be cautious when I resume playing. I am looking forward to shortly joining my friends and rivals on the PGA Tour.”
Before the injury, the UGA graduate from Valdosta, Georgia, was experiencing a career revival. He had won twice in 2021 to qualify for the Tour Championship and was the captain’s choice for the winning Ryder Cup team.
English competed at Augusta National for the first time since 2016 and placed T-21 at the 2021 Masters.
He withdrew from the WM Phoenix Open in February before deciding to get surgery to address an issue that had been bothering him since shortly after the Ryder Cup. He hasn’t competed on the PGA Tour since the Sony Open in January.
