Danny Gokey lost his first wife, Sophia Martinez, during her third surgical attempt to treat a congenital heart disease.

There had been complications during the surgery, and Sophia who was a big fan of American Idol didn’t make it.

Four weeks later, Gokey made his way to the American Idol contest, where he made it to the top three finalists.

Gokey credits his success on the show to his late wife cum high school sweetheart, Sophia. According to him, she was his source of encouragement in music.

In honour of Sophia’s memory, Gokey had set up the Sophia’s Heart Foundation, with branches in Milwaukee, Nashville, and Sacramento, to cater for homeless children and needy families.
