The infantile Pee-wee Herman persona began as a theater performance, which quickly led to an HBO special in 1981.
Reubens joined the Los Angeles-based improvisational comedy team The Groundlings in the 1970s and stayed for six years, working alongside Bob McClurg, John Paragon, Susan Barnes, and Phil Hartman.
Hartman and Reubens became close friends, frequently writing and working on projects together. Reubens penned sketches, honed his improvisation talents, and co-created the Pee-wee Herman character with Hartman.
