Christian James McCollum was born on September 19, 1991, in Canton, Ohio, United States. His parents are Kathy Andrews and Errick McCollum I. He has an older brother, ErrickMcCollum, who is also a professional basketball player.

CJ McCollum attended GlenOak High School in his native city of Canton, Ohio where he played high school basketball for the Golden Eagles. He proceeded to attend the private college Lehigh from 2009 to 2013.

CJ McCollum played college basketball for the Lehigh Mountain Hawks and was named the Patriot League Player of the Year in both 2010 and 2012. He became the first player to ever enter the league out of the private school, Lehigh. He was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers with the tenth overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft.

CJ McCollum was elected president of the National Basketball Players Association on August 7, 2021. He was later traded to the New Orleans Pelicans in 2022. He was named the NBA Most Improved Player during his third year in the league in 2015–16.
