During the September 11, 2001 attacks, 2977 people were killed, 19 hijackers committed murder-suicide, and more than 6000 others were injured. Of the 2996 total deaths (including the terrorists), 2763 were in the World Trade Centre and the surrounding area, 189 were at the Pentagon, and 44 were in Pennsylvania.

These deaths included 265 on the four planes. The attacks remain the deadliest terrorist act in world history.

Most of those who perished were civilians except for 343 members of the New York City Fire department and 71 law enforcement officers who died in the World Trade Centre and on the ground in New York City, a United States Fish and Wildlife Service Office of Law Enforcement officer who died when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
A total of 2750 victims were confirmed to have died in the initial attacks at the World Trade Center site.
