Angeline Brown was born on September 30, 1931, in Kulm, North Dakota, the second of Fredericka (née Hehr) and Leo Henry Brown’s four daughters. Her family and friends dubbed her “Angie.” Her family was descended from German immigrants who came to Russia, and she was brought up as a Catholic.

Her father was a publisher and editor for the Edgeley Mail and the Kulm Messenger, two small-town newspapers. She grew up loving movies because her father was a projectionist at the only movie theater in the area until it burned down.

At the age of 10, the Brown family moved to Burbank, California. She graduated from Bellarmine-Jefferson High School there in 1947 at the age of 15 after attending there. The year before, she had won the sixth annual Bill of Rights essay competition.

She continued her study at Immaculate Heart College and Glendale Community College in Los Angeles, where she received her commerce degree in 1954. In order to follow in the shoes of her publisher father, she had always aspired to be a writer.
