The only surviving founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gary Rossington has been reported dead at the age of 71. No cause of death has been announced yet.

Who survived the plane crash with Lynyrd Skynyrd?

Five members of the band survived the plane crash. Those members were Allen Collins, Billy Powell, Artimus Pyle, Gary Rossington, and Leon Wilkerson. The crash killed three members of the group; Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and Cassie Gaines.

The surviving members of Lynyrd Skynyrd who were involved in the crash suffered severe injuries. Allen Collins suffered two cracked vertebrae in his neck, while Leon Wilkeson nearly had his arms amputated, he also suffered internal injuries including a punctured lung and loss of several teeth. Gary Rossington also broke his arms and both legs. Leslie Hawkins sustained a concussion, broke her neck in three places, and had severe facial lacerations. The band’s security manager, Gene Odom was severely burned on his arm and face and lost sight in one eye due to the severity of the injury. Pianist, Billy Powell’s nose was nearly torn off even though he survived.
