Jones commenced his legal practice in Leicester in 1958, where he served the community until 1970. The subsequent years saw him transition to the legal hub of London, practicing law until 1975 when he took a significant step in his career. On the 14th of January 1975, he was sworn in as a circuit judge by the Lord Chancellor. His judicial assignment was to the Midland and Oxford circuit, where he presided over cases at the Central Criminal Court.
