Francois “Faf” de Klerk was born on October 19, 1991, in Mbombela, South Africa. He has played rugby at Hoërskool Waterkloof in Pretoria. Faf de Klerk made his debut in a 21–20 victory over the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein as part of the Lions squad.

Faf de Klerk was included in the Lions squad for the 2014 Super Rugby season. Faf de Klerk departed the Sale Sharks club at the end of the 2021-22 season.

Faf de Klerk joined Yokohama Canon Eagles in Japan Rugby League One at the end of the 2021-22 season after four seasons with the Sharks.
