Taremi was a late bloomer who started his career with Shahin Bushehr and Iranjavan before joining Persepolis from 2014 until 2018. Mehdi Taremi twice finished first in the Persian Gulf Pro League (2015–16 and 2016–17).

Between 2018 and 2019, he was a member of the Qatari team Al-Gharafa. He then joined Rio Ave in Portugal, where he shared the league’s scoring lead in 2019–20. He transferred to Porto, a Portuguese team, in 2020.

In addition to participating in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Taremi made his debut as a senior in 2015.
