Nacho Fernandez made his senior squad debut on September 2, 2013, as a replacement for the injured Iigo Martnez, after appearing for the Spanish national team at the under-17, under-19, and under-21 levels.

On September 10, 2013, he made his debut in a friendly match against Chile, coming on in the second half to replace Real Madrid teammate Sergio Ramos. In Geneva, the game concluded in a 2-2 tie.

Nacho was included in Spain’s final World Cup team in 2018. On June 15, 2018, he scored his first international goal as a right-back against Portugal in a group-stage encounter. He scored with an amazing curled shot from 30 meters, contributing to an exciting 3-3 tie, despite having conceded a penalty earlier in the game.

Nacho is known for his versatility in defensive positions, having played as a center-back, right-back, and left-back for both Julen Lopetegui and Zinedine Zidane. Because of his technical talents on the ball and his proclivity to make attacking runs down the flanks, he is regarded as a reliable full-back option.
