Nicolas Cage was born Nicolas Kim Coppola in Long Beach, California. He is the son of dancer-choreographer Joy Vogelsang and comparative literature professor August Coppola, whose brother is the filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola.

He is of Italian and Polish and German ancestry (both from his father). Early in his career, Cage changed his name in an effort to establish his own identity.

He initially majored in theatre at Beverly Hills High School (though he left at age 17), and after landing a small role in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), most of which was cut, he decided that the only way to pursue a career in film would be to sell popcorn at the Fairfax Theater.
