The Church of Scientology has denied that Shelly Miscavige is missing, stating that she is not a public figure and has chosen to lead a private life. The church has also stated that she is not being held against her will or in any way mistreated.
In August 2013, actress Leah Remini, a former Scientologist and vocal critic of the organisation, reported Miscavige missing to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

The LAPD stated a few days after receiving the report that they had located Miscavige and that she was not missing, so the case was closed.
In a subsequent communication in 2018, an attorney representing the Church of Scientology claimed that she is still a dedicated Sea Org member and lives a private life.
However, some individuals and organizations, such as the group Anonymous and former members of the Church of Scientology, have claimed that Shelly Miscavige is being held against her will at a secretive church compound known as “The Hole.”
