Stefanie Maria “Steffi” Graf was born on June 14, 1969, in Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg, West Germany to her parents Peter Graf and Heidi Graf. Her father Peter Graf is a car-and-insurance salesman.

Steffi Graf has a younger brother named Michael Graf. She played in her first professional tournament in October 1982 at Filderstadt, Germany but lost her first-round match to Tracy Austin. She became the first tennis player to achieve the Golden Slam by winning all four major singles titles and the Olympic gold medal in the same calendar year in 1988.

Steffi Graf is the only tennis player, male or female, to have won each major tournament at least four times. She was ranked world No. 1 in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) for a record 377 total weeks. She is the winner of 22 major singles titles.

Steffi Graf has won 107 singles titles, ranking her third on the WTA’s all-time list. She won six French Open singles titles, seven Wimbledon singles titles, four Australian Open titles, and five US Open singles titles. She is the only singles player (male or female) to have achieved a Grand Slam across three surfaces (grass, clay, and hard courts).

Steffi Graf won five consecutive singles majors (1988 Australian Open to 1989 Australian Open) and reached a total of 31 singles major finals. She retired at the age of 30 in 1999 and is regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. She was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame in 2004.
