A former player with EHC Visp of the Swiss League, Jacob Virtanen is a professional ice hockey player from Canada (SL). Sixth overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, the Vancouver Canucks selected Virtanen.

Prior to the 2016–17 season, Virtanen received a training camp invitation from the Canucks but showed up overweight. When he arrived, Virtanen weighed 231 pounds despite being told to maintain a weight of 213 throughout the offseason. After spending 10 games with the Canucks, Virtanen was transferred to the Utica Comets, where he spent the majority of the season.

Virtanen was unable to sign a deal with an NHL team due to his off-season status as an unsigned free agent and the pending sexual misconduct charges against him. On September 7, 2021, Virtanen signed a one-year contract with Russian team Spartak Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League as the 2021–22 season got begin overseas (KHL).
Due to a “breach of contract,” Virtanen was dismissed from his Spartak Moscow contract on March 7, 2022, at a time when numerous international KHL players had already quit the league following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February of that year.
