Jean Faut Bio
Being the second-eldest child of a working-class family during the Great Depression, Jean Anna Faut was raised in East Greenville, Pennsylvania. Faut succeeded in other sports like track and field, basketball, and field hockey despite not having played softball as a child.
Also, she pitched for the school’s baseball club and practiced various pitches by competing in exhibition games against a local semi-pro squad. Faut worked in the textile industry from her high school graduation in 1942 until the spring of 1946, when she went to an audition for the AAGPBL in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
In her first season, Faut played primarily at third base for the South Bend Blue Sox in 1946. At third base, she made 60 errors while hitting.177 with 40 RBIs and 37 runs scored. In order to make the game more interesting and resemble men’s baseball, the AAGPBL significantly altered the rules that year.
These modifications included allowing sidearm pitching and expanding the base paths and pitching distance. Faut was then added to the Blue Sox pitching staff and went on to have an 8-3 record with a 1.32 ERA in 12 appearances, placing third in both ERA and winning percentage (.727).
The AAGPBL increased to 10 teams in the ensuing years and made more modifications, such as switching completely to overhand pitching in 1948, which brought the game closer to standard baseball. Faut played successfully despite these adjustments and was a dependable starting pitcher in the league until her retirement in 1953.
