At the age of 80, Jean-Pierre Jabouille passed away. He was the first driver for Renault to win a Formula 1 race.

The deceased former racer and engineer passed away on Thursday, according to French media. Even though he only competed for a short time in Formula One, the Frenchman had an enduring impression on the sport by guiding the young Renault team to victory in the late 1970s.

After winning the Formula Two championship the year before, he was hired by the automaker to assist in the development of their new engine for the 1977 racing season. In contrast to Renault’s first two years of F1 competition, the 1979 season was eventually successful.

By that time, Renault had two cars on the road and had partnered with Jabouille with Rene Arnoux. They were propelled to the top of the grid by a new ground-effect car that was introduced during the season; the French Grand Prix served as the best example of their improvement.
