French racing driver Jean-Pierre Alain Jabouille lived from 1 October 1942 to 2 February 2023. While competing in the first two years of Renault’s turbocharged program in the late 1970s and early 1980s, he participated in 55 Formula One Grands Prix and earned two victories.

From the late 1960s to the early 1990s, Jabouille also competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, driving for Alpine, Matra, Sauber, and Peugeot, and earning four third-place overall results in 1973, 1974, 1992, and 1993. One of the few Formula One drivers who was also an engineer was Jabouille.
In 1969, he competed in his first complete Grand Prix, placing 12th in a works Tyrrell at the French Grand Prix. won the European Formula Two series for Alpine in 1975 and came in second place the following year.
For the development of their new 1.5-liter turbocharged engine in 1977, Renault hired Jabouille. The RS01 car made its debut at the British Grand Prix, however, it had poor fuel economy and turbo lag. He achieved Renault’s first Formula One victory and the first pole position for the team in 1979.

Midway through the 1980s, Jabouille got back into racing. He competed in the French Supertouring Championship before joining Peugeot to work on their sports car program for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In the end, the marque finished third in the races in 1992 and 1993.
He succeeded Jean Todt as director of Peugeot Sport in 1994, but he was fired in 1995 after a string of disappointing seasons for Peugeot as McLaren and Jordan’s engine suppliers in Formula One. He then managed his own sports car team in the ISRS after that.

Jabouille was once married to Geneviève Cottin. The pair tied the knot on the 9th of November 1974 and officially broke things off on the 5th of June 1997.
