He was born on May 3, 1963, in Elmhurst, Illinois, United States to Sue Hornacek and John Hornacek.
Jeff completed Lyons Township high school in La Grange, Illinois and subsequently graduated from Iowa State University in 1986.

Jeff played shooting guard in the NBA from 1986 to 2000 and played collegiately at Iowa State University.
He served as the head coach for both the Phoenix Suns and the New York Knicks from 2016 to 2018.
