Stephen John Fry was born on August 24, 1957, in Hampstead, London, the United Kingdom to parents Alan Fry and Marianne Eve Fry Newman. His father Alan worked as a physicist and inventor.

Stephen Fry was raised alongside an older brother, Roger Fry, and a younger sister, Joanna Jo Fry. He rose to prominence in the 1980s as one half of the comic double act Fry and Laurie, alongside Hugh Laurie. The two made appearances in A Bit of Fry & Laurie as well as Jeeves and Wooster.

Regarding his education, Stephen Fry attended Cawston Primary School in Cawston, Norfolk; Stouts Hill Preparatory School in Uley, Gloucestershire; Uppingham School in Rutland; Paston School; Norfolk College of Arts and Technology; City College Norwich, and Queens’ College, Cambridge.

Stephen Fry has starred in Wilde (1997), for which he was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. He has appeared in Gosford Park (2001), Love & Friendship (2016), Chariots of Fire (1981), A Fish Called Wanda (1988), The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2004), V for Vendetta (2005), Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) and The Hobbit film series.

Stephen Fry had television roles in Blackadder, Kingdom and Absolute Power, as well as Bones and It’s a Sin. For his adaptation of Me and My Girl for the West End, he received two Laurence Olivier Awards and a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play following its transfer to Broadway.
