John Crawley’s cricketing career began at Manchester Grammar School, where he shattered several batting records held by the legendary Mike Atherton. After finishing high school, he went on to study at Trinity College, Cambridge, while also playing first-class cricket for Lancashire and Cambridge University.

Crawley began his career as a paid amateur with Farnworth CC in the Bolton League before moving on to the professional ranks with Lancashire County Cricket Club.

During the 1990 season, he made his first-class debut for Lancashire. He managed to juggle his cricket responsibilities while attending university, representing both Lancashire and Cambridge University in first-class matches.

Crawley turned professional after graduation and stayed with Lancashire, even becoming captain from 1999 to 2001.

Crawley’s career was marked by numerous memorable innings. In a tour match for Lancashire against a powerful Australian cricket squad in 1993, he scored 109 runs.

Despite Australia’s overwhelming victory in the 1993 Ashes series against England, Australian coach Bob Simpson regarded Crawley as the best hitter he had seen that summer. Crawley was named Young Cricketer of the Year by the Cricket Writers’ Association in 1994 in honor of his talent and achievements.
