He currently competes at 79 kilograms and previously competed at 74 kilos.
Burroughs attended Winslow Township High School, where he won three district titles, two regional championships, and was a state champion in 2006 at 135 pounds.
In 2006, he accepted a scholarship to the University of Nebraska as the 52nd-ranked senior in the nation.
Burroughs was a three-time All-American, two-time NCAA Division I champion for the Nebraska Cornhuskers and was awarded the Dan Hodge Trophy (equivalent to the Heisman Trophy) in 2012.

He has won six world wrestling titles, combining with his 2012 Olympic title to become the first U.S. wrestler with seven global gold medals.
