Woodruff attended Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina, starting in 1964, initially pursuing a degree in mathematics. After two years at Meredith, Woodruff transferred to Duke University in 1966. She graduated from Duke with a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1968. Woodruff received an honorary degree (DHL) from Duke in 1998 and was also awarded honorary degrees by the University of Scranton in 1991 and by the University of Pennsylvania (LL.D.) in 2005.
