Katharine Birbalsingh took over as Chair of the Social Mobility Commission in October 2021, after Martina Milburn. Despite her new role, she continued to work at Michaela’s school. The Minister for Women and Equalities, Liz Truss, applauded Birbalsingh’s approach at Michaela, highlighting the significance of high standards and fair opportunities.

Birbalsingh, on the other hand, came under fire in April 2022 for statements she made about young women’s lack of enthusiasm in pursuing physics. She remarked that girls are often uninterested in physics due to its difficult mathematical parts. In reaction to the criticism, she defended her remarks in a Daily Telegraph story.

Birbalsingh eventually resigned from her job in January 2023, claiming her wish to freely voice her thoughts without compromising the Social Mobility Commission’s name.

Birbalsingh identifies as a small-c conservative and claims that many basic values that were formerly regarded normal have vanished from society. She feels that progressive beliefs in schools have hampered ethnic minority and working-class children’s academic success.

The political left’s response to educational difficulties, she claims, entails pouring more money into schools rather than addressing the fundamental issues. Birbalsingh emphasizes the significance of ideas and contends that if these ideas are wrong, the education system would fail to produce the desired results.

Katharine Birbalsingh School Rules

Birbalsingh supports conventional instruction and adheres to military-style discipline: pupils must stroll the halls quietly and are given detentions if they forget a pencil case, ruler, or assignment. You learn the times tables by heart. Methods of progressive instruction are avoided. Expectations are high and gratitude is practiced.

Katharine Birbalsingh Ethnicity

Birbalsingh was born in 1973 in Auckland, New Zealand, to Frank Birbalsingh, an academic of Indo-Guyanese heritage, and his wife, Norma, a Jamaican nurse.
