Born on January 23, 1996, in Sacramento, California, to Richard and Wilma Bates, Bates-Diop’s journey to NBA stardom is deeply rooted in the support and influence of his parents.

The Bates family, recognizing the significance of their cultural heritage, decided to add “Diop” to Keita’s surname. This meaningful addition is a tribute to Cheikh Anta Diop, a distinguished Senegalese scientist and anthropologist, under whom Richard Bates had the privilege of studying. This connection reflects not only a personal touch to Keita’s name but also a profound appreciation for African scholarship and heritage within the Bates family.

Richard Bates, Keita’s father, played a pivotal role in shaping his son’s academic and athletic pursuits. Having studied under the renowned Cheikh Anta Diop, Richard instilled a love for learning and a strong work ethic in Keita. This academic foundation has undoubtedly contributed to Keita’s success both on and off the basketball court.

The small forward’s basketball journey began at University High School in Normal, Illinois. During his junior year, Bates-Diop showcased his exceptional skills by averaging an impressive 18.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks.

His outstanding performance earned him recognition as one of the top five candidates for Illinois Mr. Basketball by the Chicago Tribune. Additionally, Rivals.com ranked him 24th nationally in his class, solidifying his status as a standout talent in high school basketball.
