Toyoda joined Toyota’s board of directors in 2000 as the founder’s grandson. Toyoda received a promotion to executive vice president in 2005. It was reported in January 2009 that Toyoda had been selected to lead the corporation as president going forward.

He was formally installed as president on June 23, 2009, along with four new executive vice presidents and eight new board members. Katsuhiro Nakagawa was replaced as vice chairman by the previous president and CEO, Katsuaki Watanabe.

He received the 2012 Autocar Man of the Year award.

Eight years ago, Akio Toyoda, the grandson of Toyota founder Kiichiro Toyoda, was appointed CEO of the largest manufacturer in the world.

The Japanese automaker produced 10.4 million automobiles in its most recent fiscal year and achieved upwards of $20 billion in net earnings.

Toyota announced in March 2018 that it would spend up to $3 billion to develop the software for self-driving cars, entering the highly competitive industry.

Toyoda is the grandson of Kiichiro Toyoda, the founder of the Toyota Motor Corporation, and the great-grandson of Sakichi Toyoda, who founded the Toyoda Automatic Loom Works.

He was the son of Shoichiro Toyoda and Hiroko (née Mitsui), and was born in Nagoya on May 3, 1956. Since the days when his carpenter-farmer great-great-grandfather, Ikichi Toyoda, taught his son fabrication and carpentry, Toyoda’s family line has controlled the highest management of the family companies.
