He also plays for the Japan national baseball team on an international level. He was the first player not born in Japan to represent the country in a World Baseball Classic.

Lars Nootbaar played college baseball for the University of Southern California (USC) Trojans. During his time at USC, he showcased his talent and earned recognition as a strong hitter with good power and a disciplined approach at the plate.
In the 2018 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft, Nootbaar was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the eighth round. He signed with the Cardinals and began his professional career in the minor leagues. He spent four seasons in their minor league system before making his MLB debut in 2021
