Describing her mother as the “greatest mother, grandmother, and wife,” Dr. Mann expressed her deep admiration for Weil. She referred to her as a best friend, confidant, and partner in crime, highlighting her as an idol and trailblazer for women in the music industry.
Weil, along with her husband and writing partner Barry Mann, formed an unparalleled songwriting duo responsible for numerous iconic hits that dominated the music scene from the 1960s to the 1990s. One of their most renowned compositions, “You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feeling,” performed by The Righteous Brothers, is considered one of the most-played songs of the 20th century, according to BMI.
The husband-wife team’s catalog includes notable singles like Dolly Parton’s “Here You Come Again,” The Drifters and George Benson’s “On Broadway,” The Crystals’ “Uptown,” and The Animals’ “We Gotta Get Out of this Place.” Parton’s hit helped catapult her to massive crossover success as an artist.

Weil and Mann also penned songs such as Paul Revere & the Raiders’ “Kicks,” The Ronettes’ “Walking in the Rain,” and Chaka Khan’s “Through the Fire,” which was later sampled by Kanye West in his debut solo single, “Through the Wire.” With an estimated 200 million records sold, Weil’s compositions have made an indelible impact on the music industry.
Their remarkable achievements were recognized with the first-ever National Academy of Songwriters Life Achievement Award. Additionally, in 2010, they became the first duo to receive the prestigious Ahmet Ertegun Award from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Despite a successful career spanning almost six decades in the music industry, Weil found a new passion as an author of young adult novels. Her creativity and talent transcended genres and generations, leaving a lasting legacy.
Cynthia Weil is survived by her husband, Barry Mann, and daughter, Dr. Jenn Mann. The music community, as well as fans worldwide, mourn the loss of an iconic songwriter whose contributions to the industry will forever be remembered and cherished.
