In 2012, he tied Kristian Berki for first place but lost out on the gold medal due to a lower execution score, earning silver instead. He then won a second consecutive silver medal on the pommel horse at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, this time falling short of compatriot and 2012 bronze medallist Max Whitlock. Smith competed for Great Britain on the team that won bronze in the men’s artistic team all-around event at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
