In 1940, Lucille met what many refer to as “Love at first sight”. She met Cuban-born bandleader Desi Arnaz while filming the Rodgers and Hart stage hit Too Many Girls. When they saw each other again on the second day, the two fell in love immediately.
The wonderful start to their love story seemed to have been fading out. Ball filed for divorce in 1944, getting an interlocutory decree; however, Arnaz and she reconciled, which precluded the entry of a final decree.
Their reconciliation seemed to have opened the door for babies. Ball gave birth to her daughter Lucie Désirée Arnaz just one month before her 40th birthday.

On May 4, 1960, the love story ended; Arnaz and Ball remained friends and often spoke very fondly of each other until he died in 1986.
